Monday to Thursday, October 10 to 13, 2023
Seven adventurous FHG linksters (Bowles, Capaz, Fiedorek, Bruce, Debarros and Stevens) headed across the Atlantic to participate in the World Hickory Open south of Glasgow. We played some fabulous courses in Dundonlad Links, Western Gailes, Kilmarnok Barassie and Prestwick, home of the first Open Championship. Fantastic weather greeted us all week but a strong wind (What’s new) made for some difficult scoring conditions.
In spite of it, the FHG contingent represented our organization in fine fashion. Carlos Debarros finished third in the pro division, while Mike Stevens was second in the Honorable 70+ category. Paul Fiedorek was 4th place in the same division. In the Archie Baird Team event Carlo teamed with Brian Weiss (Wisconsin), Deal Hudson (Atlanta) and Michael O’Donnell (Philadelphia) to lead team USA to 4th place. I was on the International Team #2 with Mats Gylldorf and Claes Svahn (Norway) and Jason Kauflin (Wisconsin) for 6th place.
What a week of international competition meeting new and old friends in an atmosphere of friendship and camaraderie. There is nothing like it and I highly recommend you put it on your bucket list. Next year the tournament will be in the Highlands of Inverness. Information will be posted in January.
