A gorgeous day greeted the Florida Hickory Golfers Saturday morning as we took to the links at the 2nd annual Melbourne Hickory event. The first round was played at the Habitat GC a challenging course as can be seen from the scoring. Not for the Grula clan, however, as both Rich and Natalie bested their quota requirement by 7 points. Rich along with Bryan “the” Bruce were atop the leaderboard accumulating 25 points each. After the round we were all treated to a fine feast at author Stephen Proctor’s farm. Stephen is the FHG member who secures the golf courses for our two-day extravaganza and celebration. It was a wonderful evening get together and hearing about Stephen’s next book venture writing about the life of Bernard Darwin.
Sunday morning was equally spectacular on a fabulous hickory venue in Spessard-Holland GC. A bit more forgiving than the Habitat but very tight fairways and lots of water hazards make accuracy a premium. It was Bill Geisler’s day as he amassed 30 points to edge out David Webster and Kip Brandt by a single point. Both Geisler and Webster exceeded their quota requirements by 6 points. Finally, a huge thank you to Stephen and his lovely wife Mara for their hospitality and the feast they provided us on Saturday evening. It’s events like this that make Florida Hickory Golfers so special.
